Phone calls when he’s not here,

I wish you were near.

I send gifts from far away

hoping they brighten your day.

I have to delete each text

fearing what happens next

if he does find out

the love we’re about.

Sounds like a lie—

if he knows, I’ll die.

His threat is true,

I’d never deceive you.

Your words are kind,

and comfort my mind.

Our love gives me life

amidst all the strife.

His insults break me,

but he doesn’t see.

That’s why your touch

means so much.

Fight or flight’s how I live.

Disdain is all he gives.

He acts like I am dim.

I can’t compare to him.

I’m disposable

yet he won’t let me go.

I’ve doubted you’d stay,

you prove you will each day.

I must earn my keep.

For him I came so cheap.

Dutiful as I serve,

I’m more than he deserves.

That’s why he’ll keep me,

and knows I won’t flee.

He is my Master,

unaware of this disaster.

Quick anger creates abuse.

Stand up to it? No use.

I dream of life with peace.

You bring me such ease.

You make me strong

even if it’s wrong.

He can tear me apart

but won’t take my heart.
